Logic and mathematics can't seem to be able to explain why it works at all.
That's only cause the equation is missing one variable:
In poker, we call it fold equity-
that's when you give in more than you're supposed to, in hope for some sort of reaction in your opponent; and even if s/he doesn't react the way you'd like, there's still a non-zero chance of winning.
